Protecting Adoption Affordability – CALL-TO-ACTION
Adoption is expensive.
Adoption is about to get even MORE expensive.
The Department of State, and the new accrediting body (IAMEE), are imposing substantial fee increases on adoption agencies in the immediate future. These considerably higher fees will translate to even higher costs for a family to adopt. Per the new accrediting body’s own information, the first set of fees – paid by prospective adoptive families (a $500. fee per adoption) – will amount to over $2 million in new adoption fees yearly. Agency accreditation fees will balloon, so much so, it is possible that agencies will not be able to afford the new fee structure to remain in operation or will determine it is not feasible to continue to facilitate international adoptions. Throughout the past number of years international adoption has seen a steady decline. These fees will likely lead to even fewer international adoptions, fewer agencies facilitating adoptions and even fewer children finding their way to the safe and permanent family they each deserve.
